A presentation by Sir Peter Gluckman, the chief science advisor to the Prime Minister and co-chair of the WHO Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity, will discuss policy developments in the area of childhood obesity.

The New Zealand Government recently announced a suite of policies aimed at addressing the alarming rise in childhood obesity, while the World Health Organization (WHO) has released the draft report of its Commission on ending Childhood Obesity.

Professor Sir Peter Gluckman will discuss both of these initiatives.  He will explore the public policy implications, including:

  • The problems of normative versus evidential argument

  • The complexities of separating advocacy from knowledge brokerage in such situations

  • The science-policy and science-values interfaces

  • The implications of the NZ initiative for implementation and evaluation.
